Barack Obama’s innovative presidential campaign built the kick-off of a new era of political campaigning. Using direct communication and actively integrating the population, potential voters spread the messages of “hope” and “change.” Especially in today’s mass media system in the US, this was a necessary tactic, given that reaching voters through mass media channels has become increasingly difficult. In this context, opinion leaders raise hope among political campaigners in the 21st century. Eloquent and well connected in both online and offline environments, opinion leaders pass on the messages to the less engaged public in their social networks.
